Good afternoon. 1pm update as we start to move toward what could be a dangerous afternoon across the Catawba Valley. Skies are partially clearing from West to East as indicated on the GOES East image attached. A line of showers and embedded storms are located in a line from Mars Hill NC to Lawrence Georgia. This line needs to be watched close as it moves into more unstable air. The atmosphere is responding to the sunshine too with CAPE (atmospheric energy) starting to spike. Helicity values are increasing as well as a back door front moves south and west toward the area. It appears that the greatest tornado threat will exist along I-40 South to Charlotte.
It would be a great idea to have plans this afternoon and evening with your family should warnings be issued for your area this afternoon. Our area remains under an "Enhanced Risk" of severe weather. That is risk level 3 out of 5. The main threat is tornadoes but straight line damaging winds are also likely. See Scotty's weather discussion from earlier for further information.
