The winter weather event starting tracking on Tuesday is underway across the Foothills and Western Piedmont, as you can see on the latest radar snow re-developed overnight across Western North Carolina and is spread off to the east. Temperatures range from the upper 20’s in the Foothills to the lower 30’s in the Western Piedmont.
Computer model data and current snowfall reports has warranted an update to the National Weather Service warning products as of 6 am, a Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for all counties in the coverage area until Noon and 6 pm as you move from west to east.
A deep trough and upper low is moving through the Southeast this morning with surface low development across the Carolinas. This will keep the snow going through at least the morning hours today before tapering off later on…
Total snowfall accumulations with the morning update has not changed very much…only difference are the slightly higher amounts expected in the Foothills, localized spots could now exceed three inches by early afternoon, 2-5 inches is still expected in our eastern counties…
The combination of the snow and cold, windy conditions are going to create hazardous travel all day across the region. Temperatures if anything will slowly drop through the day with arctic air continuing to press eastward.
Our winter storm index remains at level 3 at this time given what we have going on with this storm system…everything still looks to be on track at this time.
