Thursday 4:15AM Conditions

Good Thursday Morning. So far travel issues have been limited to I-40 and Black Mountain where sleet is reportedly cover the roadway. The only icing reports have been on the Eastern slope of the Blue Ridge so far as well.

Temps continue to fall and are in the mid 30's nearly area wide. A few isolated pockets are dropping down to 32 near the Blue Ridge in McDowell. Little Switzerland, Jonas Ridge, and Blowing Rock, and Black Mountain have all been at, or below 32 degrees since around 1am. Again, DOT continues to work on Black Mountain with a salt and slag operation. Travel is slow through there but it is passable. I haven't heard of any roadway closures from any of the surrounding emergency operations centers either. Right now, things look on regular schedule across the foothills.

The heaviest rainfall is likely going to mix with sleet over the next 2 - 4 hours. Some accumulation of sleet is possible on elevated surfaces in Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, and McDowell.

In the Southern and Eastern Counties of Catawba, Lincoln, Cleveland, and Rutherford we are watching this heavy rain moving into your area too. Temps in the Northeast quadrant of Catawba County near Riverbend Middle School are showing around the 32 degrees as well. Some elevated surfaces could be ice covered North of 40 in Catawba County as well. The main concern in Lincoln, Cleveland, and Rutherford is this heavy rain moving in. Rainfall rates of nearly 1.5 inches an hour are occurring. Rainfall of this magnitude could bring small streams and creeks out of their banks.
