Awaiting The Rain/Freezing Rain
Updated: Nov 24, 2018
Good Friday Evening to everyone. Temps running in the mid and upper 30's as of 6:12pm. With dewpoints running in the low and mid 20's across the area making wetbulb temps in the upper 20's to low 30's across the area, the forecast looks on track. Rain will likely start between 7:00om and 9:00pm tonight. This will be in the form of light liquid rainfall. About 3-4 hours into the event tonight temps fall down to or just below freezing in areas just East of the Blue Ridge and along I-40 and North. That puts Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Rutherford all in the Winter Weather Advisory for mainly travel issues due to light icing during the early morning hours of Saturday.
After freezing rain starts, likely around midnight, roads will become slick. Bridges and overpasses are the main concern. Areas that remain shaded this time of year through the day will also become slick quick. Trees and powerlines will likely have a light accretion of ice on them as well. Total ice should remain below .2 of an inch. Areas in the NW Mountains and South Mountains could approach .25 of an inch of ice. Temps will warm though early Saturday above freezing and limit the ice from becoming any more of a problem.
Updates will be posted through the night.
