Brief Winter Mix Tuesday Morning Along and North of I-40 And In The NC Mountains

Good Monday Morning. Our area could see another round of winter weather tomorrow (Tuesday) Morning. Now outside of the mountains we aren't thinking that this will amount to much.

Discussion:

Fast moving low pressure will spread precipitation into the area Tuesday Morning. This precipitation will initially overrun temperature and dewpoints that should support snow for a short time around daybreak Tuesday. As warmer air advances north into the area expect a transition from snow, to rain and snow, and eventually liquid rain across the foothills. Across the higher elevations though temperatures should support snowfall for a couple of hours Tuesday Morning. Even there though the warm air will win out, changing the precipitation over to freezing rain and then liquid rain. All precipitation will be short lived though as this system advances quickly out of the area. In the mountains a period of Northwest snow could occur Tuesday Afternoon into the early nighttime hours.

Impacts:

Alexander, Greater Burke, Greater Caldwell, Northern Catawba, and Greater McDowell:

Precipitation moves in Tuesday Morning around daybreak. This starts as a period of very light wet snow and mixes with rain. A very quick change over to liquid rain should occur and limit accumulations to near zero. Total liquid equivalent precipitation .10 to .20 of an inch.

Northwest Burke, Northwest Caldwell, Northwest McDowell:

Precipitation moves in Tuesday Morning just before daybreak. Light snow should be the predominate precipitation type. Precipitation should fall as mainly snow for an hour or so before the warmer air wins out here, moving in aloft first. Surface temps should remain at or below 32 degrees though after the changeover from snow to liquid. This should allow a period of freezing rain to occur along the Eastern slopes above 3000ft. Freezing rain will quickly change over to liquid rain though precluding any substantial ice accretion. Snow accumulation of 1-2 inches is possible before it mixes with rain. Total liquid equivalent precipitation .10 to .25 of an inch.

Southern Catawba, Cleveland, Lincoln, and Rutherford:

Precipitation will fall predominately as liquid rainfall. As the precipitation starts a few wet snowflakes could mix in. Rainfall amounts of .10 to .20 of an inch.

Timing:

6am to Noon Tuesday
