Next Storm System to Roll In Friday Night and Saturday, Some Wintry Precip Expected

First off we hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving with family and friends. The weather team is back to work following the next storm system that will impact the region for the holiday weekend, lets set the stage for you...


A strong high pressure across New England is delivering a fresh arctic airmass to the Carolinas and funneling down the eastern slopes of the Appalachians. That high pressure is on the retreat moving out into the Atlantic. Meanwhile low pressure is organizing along the Gulf Coast and will bring a wet Friday night and Saturday to the region...

This moisture when it arrives late Friday night will override the arctic air that was put in place. As you can see on this dewpoint map the Western Carolinas will have a good bit of that airmass to interact with the moisture...this will all set the stage for the possibility of some frozen or freezing precipitaton late Friday night and into the early morning hours of Saturday...






Future Radar 1 am Saturday

Computer model data has really focused in on the potential of some freezing precip late Friday night, most likely starting just after midnight and lasting until around daybreak Saturday. This is very similar to the icing event of last Thusday along the immediate Blue Ridge. Precip types would be in the form of freezing rain and a little bit of sleet in the coldest locations....







Future Temps (Midnight Friday night)

Sub-freezing temps may occur for a few hours on Friday night, possibly reaching the Interstate 40 Coridoor by midnight and seeping into the sections of Rutherford and Upper Cleveland Counties after midnight...










Right now we do not see this as a major event locally but any of the eight counties in the coverage area has the possibility of seeing light ice accretions with trees, power lines and colder metal objects most prone to buildup. The potential for icy conditions should diminish after daybreak and be done prior to noon Saturday...
