Narrative:

A strong weather system will affect our area Sunday through Monday with periods of heavy rainfall, high winds, and severe weather. Showers will arrive Sunday Morning across the area and become more widespread and heavier through the day. Winds will become sustained 10-20mph by Sunday Afternoon with gusts to 35/40mph. By Sunday Evening rain will anchor along and east of the Blue Ridge Mountains as flow off of the Atlantic piles moisture into the region. By midnight Sunday Night 1 - 1.5 inches of rain are possible, with some locally higher amounts along the eastern slopes. Winds will increase to 15/25mph with gusts to 40/45mph by midnight Sunday Night/Monday Morning. As the main weather system passes by to the North and West, through Tennessee and Kentucky, a secondary weather system could develop and move Northeast along the I-85 Corridor. This, coupled with already strong winds from the southeast, will increase wind speed and turn wind direction in our area. Between 3am and 7am a cluster of supercell type thunderstorms will move across the area followed by a line of potentially severe storms. The initial few isolated storms could create a few, mainly weak tornadoes across our coverage area. Catawba, Cleveland, and Lincoln Counties stand a slightly higher risk of seeing an isolated strong/violent tornado and longer tracked tornado but the highest risk for those will be along and East of I-77 and South of I-85. Large hail could also accompany thunderstorms as they move across. The atmosphere could likely support some golfball sized hail stones. By 8am the storms should be East and out of the area but monitor for later forecast adjustments.

Next update around 8pm tonight or as needed through the day.
