Winter Weather Possible For Some Sunday Evening. Cold Rain For Others.
As the weather often does in North Carolina we have seen big changes this week. Near 80 degrees midweek and now talking about some light icing just 4 days later. Southern foothills you will be ok. The areas along and North of I-40 could see a brief period of freezing rain on Sunday Evening though.
Weak high pressure will continue to build down the Eastern slopes of the mountains. To the west, low pressure develops in the plains and moves North-Northeast. Limited moisture will spread into the area Sunday, overrunning the weak and shallow pool of dry air. As precipitation falls into this shallow pool of dry air it will cool temperatures down toward the dewpoint. Warm air aloft means this will fall as rain or freezing rain. South of I-40 should see temperatures only fall back into the upper 30's while North of I-40 the drier air could allow a few places to fall back to the freezing mark. Even north of I-40 all areas will not see freezing rain. This will be a scattered freezing rain event and it will be light. Precipitation amounts through 10pm Sunday remain below .10 of an inch. Some places could remain dry before more steady rain moves in late Sunday. Fortunately as the steadier and heavier precipitation moves in it looks like all areas will transition to liquid rain as warmer air advects north. So we are only looking at a few hours with a chance of ice. Temperatures slowly rise through the night Sunday into Monday Morning.
The heaviest rain likely will hold off until Monday Afternoon and Evening. The long range pattern turns active again next week with times of above average temperatures and times of below average temps. The pattern also could support another winter weather event late month for the area. We will keep our eye on it.
