Sunday Weather Briefing: January 21, 2018

Good afternoon, Foothills Weather Nation!

This briefing will be, well... brief! There are three parts to our week ahead: a cold frontal passage, a building ridge, and a trough bringing in a warm front and a cold front. Let's get to it!

Today we have mainly sunny skies as a high pressure rests over the area bringing in warmer temperatures (high in the low 60's, low in the low 40's) and light and variable winds. Tomorrow will be a foggy start in our more low lying areas which will clear out by 9 am. Partly sunny conditions throughout the day and lingering katafront precipitation probabilities starting as early as 1 pm tomorrow as we have a cold front approaching. Monday night will be where the bulk of the rain is to happen with rain totals around a tenth to a quarter inch for the entire event. It's not unreasonable to believe there's a chance of a thunderstorm during this time where there could be some localized heavy rains and maybe some gusts, but nothing as severe as we have seen a few months ago. Precipitation probabilities close off by 10 am Tuesday which is there about when we will feel the temperature impact of our cold front. Expect Tuesday to be in the mid 50's with clearing conditions and light winds.

This is where the second stage of weather events take hold for the majority of the week. A ridge will begin to build over the area as a high pressure nudges it's way from the Gulf over the southeastern US. From Wednesday until Saturday morning this will bring very pleasant, sunny conditions, highs in the low 50's, and lows in the upper 20's/low 30's.

Starting on Saturday afternoon we will see another bump in precipitation as a warm front associated with a well developed trough will progress into the area. So far it's too far out to assume any severe events, but we know it will be nearly spring-esque thanks to the warmer temps. The cold front associated with the trough should begin to nudge it's way in late Sunday, early Monday. The timing on this isn't so clear as of yet.

Thank you all for reading. I hope everyone was a wonderful week by enjoying the pleasures of being a North Carolinian- snow one week, t-shirts the next!

Have a blessed day!
